Support Fair Housing for All at Open Communities' Walk the Redline!
On Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 10 am -1 pm, our community will gather at the Evanston Ecology Center and then walk the North Shore Channel loop trail to raise funds, awareness, and activation for abundant housing.
Background on redlining and info on the event:
Redlining was a historical practice where officials drew maps in red around neighborhoods of color and denied equitable access to credit there. This caused segregation and harmful disinvestment in neighborhoods across the U.S., including in Evanston’s 5th ward. Where you live matters. Although the Fair Housing Act of 1968 made redlining illegal, we continue to feel the practice’s harmful effects in widening racial gaps in wealth, health, and education. Modern redlining appears in more covert ways today including through unequal access to credit.
At our annual community event, participants will walk or roll a 1- or 2-mile educational route on the North Shore Channel Trail, along the western border of Evanston’s historically redlined neighborhood. Information along the path and at the Evanston Ecology Center resource fair will explore our past and imagine ways to create an abundant, inclusive housing future - where everyone throughout the lifespan can find a place to live and thrive in our community.
Your generosity supports our mission to:
- Stand up for people experiencing housing discrimination
- Increase housing accessibility and affordability
- Help neighbors keep stable homes and prevent homelessness
- Advocate for welcoming neighborhoods and protect housing rights
- Create communities we can all call home
Create your own fundraising page and gather sponsors for your walk or form a team to raise more funds and awareness about housing needs in our community.
Our mission: Open Communities works to eradicate housing discrimination and unjust practices that perpetuate segregation and inequity. We foster thriving, inclusive communities through fair housing enforcement, housing counseling, education, outreach, and advocacy.
Together, we can create communities where we can all live and thrive.
Thank you for your support and solidarity!!
