The read-a-thon aims to achieve three things:

• Amplify the stories of immigrant authors from all across the global diaspora
• Encourage community members of all ages to learn more about the immigrant experience
• Activate grassroots giving to support organizations providing essential services to immigrant communities

Why Read? Immigrant communities are under attack.

Public narratives are criminalizing immigrant groups. Book bans and attacks on DEI are trying to stop us from learning about the journeys of people migrating to the United States. Welcoming cities like Chicago are being targeted by raids and anti-immigrant politicians. Read to grow your awareness and show that you support your neighbors! Kids can do this too! 

The Read-a-Thon will directly benefit the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights (ICIRR). ICIRR is dedicated to promoting the rights of immigrants and refugees to full and equal participation in the civic, cultural, social, and political life of our diverse society. ICIRR stands up for immigrants by supporting access to health care and education, offering Know Your Rights Trainings, and leading policy and advocacy efforts.

The event will culminate with a community celebration featuring readings by local authors, interactive art-making sessions, book giveaways, and valuable community resources. Families and read-a-thon supporters will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, explore diverse literary works, and take home books that inspire action and advocacy. 

Most importantly, this will be a space for US-- a space to be reminded that we are stronger together and that joy is the antidote to repression. We have what we need to make a difference. We are who we need to stay in this fight together.
