Wisconsin Roots Rising is a giving day built for the organizations that don't usually get one. On October 14, every dollar you give goes directly to grassroots groups and emerging nonprofits doing community-driven work across Wisconsin. These are organizations that are rising, building, and becoming what our communities need. They're neighbors, advocates, and changemakers who are just getting started, fiscally sponsored by Embolden WI and the Center for Community Stewardship so they can focus on their work while they grow. Your gift gives them a seat at the table. Start your page, share your story, and invite others to rise with you.

Altera Circular Solutions

Altera Circular Systems began with a question I kept returning to: What can we do with what we already have? My background has always pushed me to look at how pieces connect—ideas, people, materials, systems, and resources—and how thoughtful structure can turn those pieces into something useful. That thinking became Altera Circular Systems. Altera is a community-centered program focused on finding practical ways to transform discarded and underused resources into something that can serve people again. Our work includes circular systems, applied research, new product development, education, community partnerships, and opportunities to build stronger local resilience. At its core, the mission is simple: Use what we have. Build what we need. There is enormous value already sitting inside our communities—clothing, materials, skills, knowledge, creativity, relationships, and lived experience. Too often those resources remain disconnected from the people and places that could benefit from them. Altera exists to help build those connections. The long-term vision is bigger than any one project. We want to explore models that communities can use to reduce waste, create practical resources, support education and workforce development, strengthen local partnerships, and eventually contribute to solutions that can be adapted in communities across the country. But meaningful systems have to begin somewhere. So we are starting locally. That means organizing community projects, building relationships with churches, schools, universities, businesses, volunteers, and other organizations, and learning through real-world implementation. It also means testing simple ideas first. A community clothing drive, for example, can do more than collect clothing. It can help us learn how resources are gathered, sorted, transported, redistributed, and supported by volunteers and community partners. Those lessons help inform stronger programs in the future. At the same time, Altera continues developing research and partnerships around larger circular-material opportunities, including ways post-consumer textiles and other underused materials may eventually be transformed into useful new products. The Potential Impact With the right systems and partnerships, this work can help communities:

keep useful materials in circulation longer;

reduce unnecessary waste;

connect existing resources with real community needs;

create opportunities for education, training, and workforce participation;

support new approaches to local resilience;

and develop models that can be tested, improved, and shared elsewhere.

A small local project can become the beginning of something much larger. How Donors Can Help Donor support helps Altera move from ideas into action.Contributions can help provide materials, event and program costs, transportation, outreach, research support, educational resources, technology, partnership development, and the basic infrastructure required to test and grow new initiatives. Every contribution helps us take another practical step. You are not simply supporting one event or one project. You are helping build the early foundation for a community-centered system designed to make better use of what we already have—and turn it into something that can continue creating value. For community. By community. With community.
