Set in small-town River City, Iowa, this crowd favorite musical follows the changes set off by the arrival of traveling salesman (and conman) Professor Harold Hill. After alarming the locals with tales of the potential dangers and moral corruption that will follow the arrival of a new pool table in the town, Prof. Hill convinces the frightened populace that the only way to preserve their children’s innocence is to form a boys’ band. Fortunately, he can sell them the instruments and uniforms at a reasonable cost, and he promises to teach the children to play the instruments using his new patented Think System: if you think the Minuet in G long enough and hard enough, you can play the Minuet in G. The townspeople are mesmerized, and, prompted by the anticipated excitement of the new band, begin to change the ways they interact with each other, bringing new life into the dull town. However, not everyone is convinced by Professor Hill’s glib exterior. In particular, Marian Paroo, the town librarian, sees through his charade and is determined to expose his lies. Will the professor be able to win her over in time to escape with the townspeople’s money, or will he have to face the (lack of) music when the band is revealed to be a fraud? Filled with classic songs such as “76 Trombones,” “Ya Got Trouble,” “Marian the Librarian,” and “Till There Was You,” The Music Man will leave you laughing, singing, and tapping your toes all the way home.
