This professional development series for teachers will include a detailed examination of the history of the Holocaust combined with significant discussion and exploration of how to teach this difficult topic to students. Each session will be led by Scott Auspelmyer, Executive Director of the SCCH, and Dr. Chad Gibbs, professor at the College of Charleston and director of the Zucker/Goldberg Center for Holocaust Studies. The first session of this series is Nazi Rise to Power and Implementation of Hate (Pre 1933 - 1938).  Presenters will lead participants on an in depth examination of the history of this era including such topics as the rise of antisemitism, fallout from World War I, the Weimar Republic, Adolf Hitler's ascension to power, the development and impact of the Nazi racial laws, and Jewish life and response in Germany during the interwar years. Interwoven with the historical discussion will be a review of useful primary sources and practical lessons that can be implemented by teachers in their classrooms. This session is located at the Wando Mount Pleasant library at 1400 Carolina Park Blvd, Mount Pleasant, SC 29466. All participants will receive lunch and a content specific book on the day of the event.
