Led by Ann Hutton of Touchstone Writers, this workshop is for both beginners and more seasoned writers. We'll use the Amherst Writers & Artists method to dive into our unique stories and shape a legacy will--a document that tells your friends and family about your accomplishments, your dearly held beliefs, where you might have fallen short of your goals, who you are now, and what you wish for future generations.  You will benefit from expressing yourself in written words and receiving positive feedback. You will learn to listen for what works in another’s writing. And you will know that practicing the craft with others can be a rewarding and enlightening experience. When people write together and share their work, something magical happens. To know others and be known authentically affirms your place in life, however impermanent it may be.

I have led writing workshops for many years in various settings—at HealthAlliance Hospital’s oncology support house, at the Omega Institute for Breast Cancer Options’ annual retreat, at Bard College’s Lifetime Learning Institute, and others. I am excited to be on this journey with you. And a journey, it is. Writing your truth through personal narrative/essay/memoir/poetry can take you to places in your own past that you might have forgotten. We’ll talk about what memoir is and how you can structure a meaningful legacy will to leave your loved ones. We will dive right into writing together at this workshop. I’ll provide notebooks or you can bring a laptop if you prefer. I will pull out a prompt or two for everyone to consider using and set a timer for 10-20 minutes. And then we’ll free-write. However the prompt hits you, whatever image you see or incident you think of—that’s what goes on the page. Afterwards, we’ll each have the opportunity to read what we’ve come up with and receive positive comments. See you at 10 a.m. sharp on September 8! Bring a brown bag lunch.
