Glendale, CA – August 15, 2025 – The Korean American Coalition (KAC) proudly presents the premiere screening of Ggachi (English translation: Magpie), a powerful short film addressing the devastating impact of hate crimes. The event will take place on Friday, August 15, 2025, at 6:00 PM at LOOK Dine-In Cinema in Glendale, California. This free public screening marks the culmination of a year-long production in partnership with Director Andrew Oh of Unit 5 Films.Although not directly tied to Korea’s liberation, the premiere coincides meaningfully with the 80th anniversary of Gwangbokjeol (National Liberation Day of Korea)—a time for reflection on struggle, survival, resilience, and collective strength.Funded by grants from the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) and the Overseas Koreans Agency (OKA), Ggachi tells the poignant story of a young Korean American woman who witnesses her grandmother’s assault in a racially motivated attack. Through the lens of trauma and healing, the film offers a deeply moving exploration of the lasting effects of hate crimes on individuals, families, and entire communities. The cast includes esteemed Korean actress Sun Woo Yong Yeo as the grandmother, rising star Kayla Lee as the granddaughter, and celebrated Korean singer Karen Yonchae Gordon as the mother. Their performances bring to life a story of pain, resilience, and the generational bonds that help carry healing forward.Following the screening, a special Q&A session will be held with lead actresses Sun Woo Yong Yeo, Kayla Lee, Karen Yonchae Gordon, writer Sun Kim, and director Andrew Oh, moderated by KAC Executive Director, Eunice Hur Song, offering behind-the-scenes insights and reflections on the film’s emotional and cultural significance.KAC-LA Executive Director Eunice Song shared,“As we mark the 80th anniversary of Gwangbokjeol, the National Liberation Day of Korea, the premiere of Ggachi carries even deeper meaning. While the film speaks directly to the ongoing crisis of anti-Asian hate, it also echoes themes of resilience, remembrance, and the strength of our shared history. We hope this event brings healing, fosters solidarity, and reaffirms the enduring power of community.” 라고 밝혔다.---Event DetailsWhat: Premiere Screening of Ggachi (Magpie)When: Friday, August 15, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, including a panel discussion following the screeningWhere: LOOK Dine-In Cinema, 128 N.
