In a city shaped by the uncompromising abolitionist vision of Frederick Douglass, we at Free the People Rochester are committed to imagining and building the necessary conditions for freedom. Our framework is simple: if people&rsquo;s basic needs are met and they have the resources to thrive, the very circumstances in which policing appears necessary are profoundly diminished. In a moment where the U.S. is undergoing immense conflict and turmoil, abolition remains as both a beacon of hope and an urgent practice for organizers across the nation.&nbsp; In celebrating our 5-year anniversary this year, our INAUGURAL conference, Abolition: A Practice of Resistance &amp; Resilience, will provide a platform for dreamers, believers, organizers, impacted individuals, and allies to reflect on our present circumstances, the sordid history of state-sanctioned violence in our community, and strategize solutions we can organize toward.&nbsp; Philip V McHarris, our keynote speaker and the author of the revered text Beyond Policing, reminds us: &ldquo;We must have the courage to imagine new worlds and develop the power to create that which we imagine. Not because it is easy or guaranteed but simply because it is our only option.&rdquo; &nbsp; Throughout the conference, we will engage in conversations and workshops that foreground abolition as a site of struggle and imagination as it pertains to policing, immigration, solidarity, and safety. We must prepare to confront the underlying conditions that produce harm while affirming our shared capacity to build something different.&nbsp; Join us as we imagine, strategize, and build toward abolitionist futures.&nbsp; Folks who have been formerly incarcerated will gain free admission to the conference.
