Students will discover the core principles and how to implement them into their work. Small studies will accompany a PowerPoint presentation. The instructor will also show how the creative process works and the steps in planning to make a finished piece of art. Art HistoryAn art history presentation will be given accompanied by an open-class discussion. We will delve into the reasons how and why art has changed through the ages. Art movements will be introduced, and we will discuss the key figures involved.    Alcohol Ink During alcohol ink, design will play a large role in the creative process. We will learn different techniques to create light to bold markings and pigment blending. The result will be a background, layered with a block print the following day to create a mixed media art piece.  Block Printing         In block printing the students will be taught how to use Speedball carving tools to create a negative image. A simple demonstration will be held followed by an open class where everyone works independently. All materials are shared amongst the class at stations. Please check the safety clause and permission check box to use the tools.                        Drawing Still Life; B&amp;W and ColorDrawing Still Life will focus on foundational concepts and practices. Students will be drawing a still-life study with a one-point light source. The class will begin by mapping out forms and learning blending techniques. We will work on the understanding of shape, light, shadow, texture, mark making, and spatial relationship. The first day focuses on creating an illusion of 3D structure and learning the rules of composition. Second-day students will be split into groups to create their own still-life selection using composition and color theory. Instructors will be walking around the room assisting the students as needed. Please bring drawing pencils or charcoal in addition to good medium-weight paper.    Collage In collage we will look at works by Pablo Picasso, David Hockney, Kara Walker, and Ben Giles. After our exploration everyone will get cutting to create a new unique image of their own. Collage participants will be provided with supplies, however, outside imagery/papers are welcome.  Mixed MediaIn mixed media the class will learn how to layer different mediums depending on their base. Oil, water, and alcohol pigments will be used whilst students integrate organic, fabric, and found objects into a uniform artwork. As a class we will explore different textures, colors, and structures. Mixed media doesn’t have any limitations; this is like collage but with various mediums. In this class we are trying to create personal, unique, and expressive artworks. I would love it if each student could bring some things from home. These items could include Paper (newspapers, magazines, photographs, etc.), Fabric, Paint (acrylic, watercolor, etc.), Ink, Found objects (buttons, beads, etc.), and Text. A 2d or 3d artwork will combine and arrange many elements onto a finished piece. Painting Abstract Crash CoursePainting Crash Course will highlight how to use paints such as watercolor, acrylic, and ink. Skills such as acrylic glazing, palette knife, color blocking, and ink build up will be given in mini lessons. We are learning the basics of how to use and manipulate the medium through its opacity and viscosity. Open studio experiments will follow each demonstration. The Abstract twist is after each mini lesson a small painting challenge will be given to the students to create a truly amazing abstract of their own. Design principles will be foundational to the success of an individual piece. Polymer Clay Sculptures          In polymer sculpture we will plan and execute our 3D design. Tools, wire, foil and clay will be provided for the students. On the first day we will create the base and build up clay to complete the finished form. The second day we will be using paint to do color application. Clear coat will be applied by staff once the sculpture is dried.  If you would like to add personal elements, please bring those.  Drawing from Life; Portrait/FigureStudents will need to bring their paper and drawing supplies. Please bring drawing pencils or charcoal in addition to good medium-weight paper. The first class will focus on facial proportions, and the second class will focus on full anatomy. Students will be drawing a live clothed model. The class will begin with a simple demonstration of anatomical form. Instructors will be walking around the room assisting the students.  Open Studio Open studio time will allow more time to complete a project or explore mediums more in-depth. An instructor will assist if needed for all creative purposes. Line Drawing-Sculpture In art, a line is a fundamental mark or stroke that defines the shape, contour, or outline of a form and can convey motion, direction, or emotion. With the power of the line the students will create a singular line drawing. What’s that you may ask? Essentially not lifting your pencil to create a drawing that has enough detail and is recognizable as a form. After we do a few line drawings, we will pick our favorite and make a small sculpture of it using wire. A wooden base will be provided.   Plein Air Oil PastelIn plein air students will pair up and sit outdoors to draw from nature using oil pastel. We will enjoy fresh air while learning a new medium. This segment teaches the students how to slow down and observe what is around them. Students will look closely to examine color transitions from shadows to highlights. We will be discussing how and why atmospheric perspective and focal fall-off occur. When picking the perfect landscape, they will have to critically think about color theory, and composition. A quick mark making refresher will be given prior to excursion.   Gallery On the last day students will have a final critic and create an art gallery show in the hall. They will be able to show off all their amazing hard work from the week. I recommend parents come to see the students’ accomplishments and celebrate their growth as an artist. WEEKLY TOPICS Artist Write-Ups and Intellectual Property Discussion: Students will need to bring paper and a pencil for note taking. An artist statement writing seminar will be directed at the beginning of class and students will create their own. We will also teach students about copyright laws and what digital output to use to prevent online piracy. We will highlight Metadata and the importance of your digital and/or physical signature. Digital Representation and Reproduction Options: Knowing how to digitally represent yourself and printing options is just the beginning of making your passion into a business platform. We will discuss how to make your art marketable. Critique: Our students will select their favorite piece from the week and have a peer review. As artists, this is how we learn together. All items selected will be allowed to be put into the mastodon fair at no cost.
