Tribune in Bloom is a tribute to the feeling of walking through Niwot, a sense of releasing a breath you did not realize you were holding.

I find these grounding moments throughout Niwot, but the corner of the Niwot Tribune is one of my favorite vignettes. The flowers and vines seem to welcome you and offer you a gentle reminder to slow down, smile, and stay awhile.

I’m Just an Animal Looking for a Home (Series). The title is borrowed from a Talking Heads lyric. These photographs follow a lone rider through Niwot, past structures built when the town was new and under a sky that hasn’t changed. The figure moves through familiar places but never quite belongs. At once present and ghostlike, the rider becomes another animal moving through the landscape.

I frequently walk Cougar Trail and sketch and paint the area, always thankful when there is shade from the trees and water in the ditch. I feel lucky to live in such a beautiful community.

Monarch Trail was painted on a windy Thursday during a Colorado Plein Air Paint-out. In Plein Air, the elements play a huge role in the painting and the wind, while difficult to paint in, created a striking and clear view of the Boulder Flatirons.

This is a Plein Air painting of a real fort in Niwot that reminds me of growing up in Alamosa, where my brother Tom and I would build rickety forts along the Rio Grande. I took some artistic license in adding the kids and the flag to the painting to help bring my own memories to life!

This large-scale study of the secluded Dodd Barn captures a structure veiled in history, secluded behind century-old cottonwoods and thick Russian olives near the reservoir. A lone ladder on the side reveals the quiet mystery: active restoration work being done on a barn that has stood for over 100 years.

While the building proudly reads Niwot Tribune, it’s been a long time since it actually housed a newspaper (1958), making every day a slow news day.

This piece balances the stark, quiet whites of the architecture with subtle, low-chroma tones, allowing the fox to suddenly jump off the page as the only truly chromatic element in the composition.
