The name &ldquo;Zonta&rdquo; is derived from a Sioux word meaning &ldquo;honest &amp; trustworthy.&rdquo; The name &ldquo;Schenectady&rdquo; is derived from a Mohawk word skahn&eacute;htati meaning &ldquo;beyond the pines&rdquo;. The city was founded on the south side of the Mohawk River by Dutch colonists in the 17th century, many from the Albany area. Zonta Club of Schenectady members have a passion for improving the status of women through advocacy. They volunteer their time, talent, energy and resources to participate actively in club projects and to raise money for the Club&rsquo;s annual scholarships, awards and grants which support local women&rsquo;s programs. Local club fundraising also supports the global efforts of Zonta International; both service projects (chosen in harmony with United Nations goals,) projects to end violence against women (ZIAVAW) and educational awards.
