2027 Heritage Hill Tour of Homes-The Founders Tour May 15th-16thGeneral Admission $25 Early Bird sale ends until March 31st 11:59pmGeneral Admission $30 starts on April 1st Long before Heritage Hill became a nationally recognized historic district, the people who lived here were helping build a city. The streets of Heritage Hill tell the story of Grand Rapids through the homes of the families who shaped their earliest years—and through the generations who later fought to preserve those homes for the future. The 2027 Heritage Hill Tour of Homes celebrates both stories: the founders and early builders of Grand Rapids and the founders of the movement that saved Heritage Hill. Many of Grand Rapids' most influential families built their homes in and around what would become Heritage Hill. They were manufacturers, merchants, lumbermen, bankers, physicians, educators, civic leaders, entrepreneurs, and community builders. Their businesses and institutions helped transform a small frontier settlement into a prosperous city. Their homes remain, but so do the stories.Inside these houses, we can imagine the lives of the people who built them—the families who gathered around their dining tables, the children who grew up in their nurseries, the visitors who entered their parlors, and the businesses and civic causes that were discussed within their walls. Yet the story does not end with the original owners.A century later, another group of people became founders in a different but just as important way. When urban renewal and demolition threatened the neighborhood in the 1960s and 1970s, residents and preservation advocates recognized that these houses represented something larger than individual properties. They represented the history of an entire city. Leaders, including Barbara Roelofs, John Logie, and Linda DeJong, along with a multitude of others, helped establish the Heritage Hill Association and built the preservation movement that protected the neighborhood. They saved the homes, and in doing so, they saved the stories.Today, Heritage Hill is one of the places where the history of Grand Rapids is still accessible and experienced through the buildings themselves. The houses allow us to connect the people who built the city with the people who fought to preserve it.The 2027 Tour of Homes brings those two generations of founders together. The founders who built Grand Rapids. The founders who saved Heritage Hill. And the families who continue their legacy today.
