One Breath Rising has been presenting spoken word and music since 2015. We have compiled a collection of poetry and prose written by the literary artists who have performed for One Breath Rising, each of whom has been recognized for their contributions to the full American story.

Although these writers are from diverse backgrounds, their work is inspired by the African-American traditions of improvisation and storytelling. They address the common themes of our day – love, grief, despair, hope, gratitude, and activism. This volume is a testament to resilience and rebirth – much needed these days.

This book will be loved by readers who like storytelling, poetry, family history, aspiring writers' autobiographical stories, African American literature, and students of contemporary American literature. Our motto, “world-class artistry in an intimate setting” is certainly reflected here.
