About 2000 years ago, hand-copying a sutra started in order to spread the teaching of Buddha when there were no printing techniques. As Buddhism developed, sutra copying became an important ascetic practice. More than its religious intent, we can practice it to relax your mind, improve concentration and mental well-being by mindfully tracing the sutras. It does not matter if one has faith in Buddhism or not, or if one’s writing is good or not.
Traditionally, sumi ink is used which you can make by rubbing an ink stick down on the ink stone. But a brush-tip pen is recommended for beginners. It makes it simple to write. Stationaries will be available.
