My birthday is May 13th, and I would feel most nurtured by aQwerch hymn sing-along around the fire Saturday 5/11, 8-10pm1521 E 35th St. Baltimore, MD Maybe we’ll go out dancing afterwards,or maybe we’ll move inside for some karaoke dance-party in the living room. BYOB, I have everything but gin to make cocktails, we have fresh mint for mocktailsBYO Snacks (neither required) I know this is a last minute invite and please be where ever your body/spirit is most enlivened to be, whomever happens to be there will bring me exactly the love I need right now  For my birthday, I am fundraising mutual aid on behalf of the community-based organization <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100070106004434" style="color:inherit;text-decoration:inherit;user-select:auto;box-sizing:inherit">Never Giving Up Hope</a> in Kisumu County, Kenya as they recover from climate change-induced severe flooding that devastated their community this past week. They are grateful for any financial support as they are struggling to access clean water, food, and blankets to keep warm. I met Farida when I spent the summer in Nairobi in 2006 for a school research project, and we’ve stayed in touch since then. Farida is always working shake up the status quo and fight for justice in innovative, community-building ways. In 2020 during the COVID crisis, she collaborated with other community members in her home village to found a community-based organization (CBO) to increase sustainable access to basic necessities for all residents, including especially the elderly and children. It’s an intergenerational project focused on enabling members to sustainably meet basic needs (and sequester carbon) through gardening, planting/growing bamboo and teaching about environmental conservation, raising chickens, ducks, sheep, and fish, teaching skills like mat-making and bamboo furniture-making, and educating community members on how to prevent gender-based violence and support survivors. The organization's mission is to harness the talents and resources available amongst the community to promote self-help activities (e.g., farming, poultry keeping, and furniture making), creativity, leadership, entrepreneurship and educational initiatives by and for the youth. Farida has invited me to share her story to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change (climate genocide) – the entire continent of Africa is responsible for only 3% of the world’s carbon emissions, but is experiencing substantial impact from climate change already. Farida’s village in rural Kisumu County (an area heavily hit by <a href="https://apnews.com/article/kenya-rain-flood-climate-change-explainer-aea93e8ee30ca16c40451cb23c397b9e" style="color:inherit;text-decoration:inherit;user-select:auto;box-sizing:inherit">climate change-caused flooding and excessive drought),</a> is currently dealing with severe flooding caused by torrential downpours this past weekend (a month’s worth of rain in 2 days), and a dam that burst in the river by their village. Many homes were flooded, ruining food stocks, clothes, school books, mattresses, and cook stoves, and they sustained significant loss of vegetable gardens, livestock, chickens, and basically all other means of sustenance. They are grateful for any financial support as they are struggling to find clean water and food, and blankets to keep warm.
