Why Springfield?
This trip builds critical thinking skills for our students because they can think about Abraham Lincoln and our state capitol from a different perspective.
It aligns with the following social studies standards:
- SS.CV.3.5: Compare the origins, functions, and structure of different systems of government.
- SS.G.1.5: Investigate how the cultural and environmental characteristics of places within the United States change over time.
- SS.H.3.5: Explain probable causes and effects of events and developments in U.S. history.
Several students may not get to attend these sites outside of a school field trip.
- Students get to explore Lincoln’s home and neighborhood where the family lived until he was elected president.
- Students visit the Illinois State Capitol where they can see where lawmakers meet to make decisions for our state and might be able to sit in on a legislative session.
- Students visit the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, his wife, Mary, and three of their four sons.
- Students visit The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum that includes hi-tech exhibits, interactive displays, and multimedia presentations.
