Collage on wood panel, 6.75x6.75" with wood frame. Artist Statement: I wanted to show the beauty of the shoreline at Isle Royale so I included the rocks and plenty of trees. There are a variety of pines and some birch trees, and of course the beautiful water. The canoe and the beach make the area inviting and accessible. The collage is made from painted paper. There are dictionary pages, maps, and mixed media paper all randomly painted to create a variety of colors and textures. Then each is cut into small shapes and added to the collage. Usually I rip the pieces for my collages, but due to the size of this project I thought that cutting would be better.

Mixed media on canvas panel, 5x5". Artist Statement: I have always been drawn to mixed media as a medium for it's dynamic nature. In many ways that unpredictable nature is reminiscent of the waves and weather of Lake Superior itself. I chose to focus on the shape of the lake itself and highlight Isle Royale as an important landmark. There are many layers of collage and paint each of which has intentionally and meaning. Water based ink on Japanese Shina woodblock hand printed to heavyweight printmaking paper, 7.5 x 5.75" with frame. Artist Statement: While beauty is an individual opinion, I have always enjoyed more whimsical and loose styles of art. My adult journey with art began with painting. I struggled with perfectionism and the need to paint the details and I didn’t always enjoy what I was creating. When I learned reduction printmaking it helped me to break away from the fine details. It allows my art to take a life of its own as I carve away at each woodblock.

Watercolor on watercolor paper, 5.25 x 5.25" with frame Artist Statement: Painting is exercising my spiritual self. What that means to me is that it is a place for me to play, take risks and totally lose myself in the process. I am an artist who puzzles, reacts, responds and organizes. My work is inspired by anything and everything; physical and ethereal. I work from thumbnail sketches and in layers. Composition and design drive my work. Most of the time I do not have a predetermined idea of what my painting will look like in the end and I like that element of surprise. I work in an abstract, whimsical and expressive style and paint in watercolor, acrylic and oil. margiehelstrom.com
