The Devil's Ball from The Mascot (1933) animated by Ladislas Starewicz
A brilliant piece of stop-motion animation that was far ahead of its time, and certainly far ahead of anything that was being released in mass production in 1933. The influence of this work upon Tim Burton's "Nightmare Before Christmas" is readily apparent. One can only imagine how Starewicz slaved over every beautifully detailed frame of this masterpiece. There have been very few animated films of this caliber. It's a shame that more people haven't seen this gem.
'Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1922/1968) is a 1922 silent horror essay film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. Consisting partly of documentary-style storytelling as well as dramatized narrative sequences, the film purports to chart the historical roots and superstitions surrounding witchcraft, beginning in the Middle Ages through the 20th century. Based partly on Christensen's own study of the Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th-century German guide for inquisitors, Häxan proposes that such witch-hunts may have stemmed from misunderstandings of mental or neurological disorders, triggering mass hysteria. Our version of the film was released in 1968 and features a voice-over narration by William S. Burroughs and a jazz soundtrack composed by Daniel Humair and performed by a quintet featuring Jean-Luc Ponty of violin.
