Announcing 58 Half Bags, a one-night participatory installation and giveaway by Honolulu artist Ben Roosevelt! For this project, Roosevelt cuts apart and recombines grocery bags, turning an ordinary object into something that is part bag, part sculpture, and part absurd prop. Fifty-eight bags will be installed in the Lab, and visitors will be invited to enter the installation, choose one, and take it home. The number 58 refers to 1958, when Matson began container-based freight service to Hawaiʻi. Using humor and an everyday object, Half Bags looks at shipping, consumerism, circulation, and the systems that shape daily life in the islands. Join us at 6 pm for the opening reception with pupus, drinks, and conversation, and leave with a Half Bag of your own.
