Celebrating 79 years of making a difference teaching, promoting and advocating for the preservation of Black history past, present and future. We celebrate the founding of Our Authors Study Club Founder Vassie D. Wright who began the work when a group of postal workers at the Terminal Annex in downtown Los Angeles sought her help to organize. Later that year she managed to persuade Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the "Father" of Black history, to charter OASC into the national Association of for the Study of Life and History, of which we remain a member today. Mrs. Wright was responsible for introducing Black history studies in to LAUSD. First in Adult school then into secondary schools. She served on the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Commission with distinction and was awarded for her outstanding service. In 1950 she began the tradition with Mayor Fletcher Bowron and every Mayor since in issuing a proclamation acknowledging the observance of Black History month open for all Angelenos.
