Join us for a concert in celebration of Baroque music! Our program includes works by a range of composers representing a variety of cultural perspectives.
Isabella Leonarda and Sulpitia Cesis were two Italian nuns born 43 years apart whose works reflect liturgical life in two different Italian Catholic convents. Bach’s cantata represents the late Baroque Lutheran liturgical tradition, while the choruses of Handel celebrate the English oratorio, a genre that Handel defined. Beyond the European context, the music of Juan Garcia de Zespedes, Manuel de Zumaya, and Ignacio de Jerusalem reflects how local indigenous traditions influenced Spanish colonial music traditions in New Spain, particularly Zespesdes’ villancico that reflects the influences of indigenous music and dance forms like the guaracha.
