Join us for vol. 004 of the Black Cinematheque spotlighting the groundbreaking work of Ousmane Sembene with screenings of 'Black Girl' and 'Mandabi'. These canonical works explore themes of identity, race, and African post-colonialism.In “Black Girl” A young Senegalese woman relocates to France to work for a wealthy white family, only to endure constant mistreatment and racial discrimination. Her life in their cramped apartment transforms into a figurative and literal prison, highlighting the persistent colonialist attitudes in a so-called postcolonial era. Filmed primarily in Wolof "Mandabi" marks a major milestone as the first film produced in an African language, a major achievement in Sembène’s mission to create cinema by, about, and for the people of Africa. Based on Sembène’s novel The Money-Order, this satirical film follows Ibrahima, an unemployed man in Dakar who lives with his two wives and children. He receives a money order for 25,000 francs from his nephew Abdou, a street sweeper in France. However, he faces numerous challenges with the local bureaucracy when trying to cash the money order.
