Marin CNPS 50th Anniversary Dinner -- August 24, 2024

Drinks and Appetizers at 5 PMDinner at 6 PM Keynote Speaker: Mary Ellen Hannibal, environmental journalist and author Science writer and author Mary Ellen Hannibal serves as an ambassador between scientists and a general audience. She has focused on understanding the science and translating it for more general audiences, and has sought to find a coherent way to break past the false divides that have so fatally set us on a collision course with nature. Mary Ellen Hannibal has authored five books. Her most recent book, Citizen Scientist: Searching for Heroes and Hope in an Age of Extinction, was named a best book of the year by the San Francisco Chronicle and won a Nautilus book award. She is the author of The Spine of the Continent: The Race to Save America’s Last, Best Wilderness, about which Publisher’s Weekly said, “this is what science writing should be: fascinating and true.” She is connected with the Hadly Lab at Stanford University as part of ongoing research for the books she has written. The Hadly Lab is working to help define and understand this human-influenced age and conducts research at Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. Many fundamental ecological processes like co-evolution were figured out at this Preserve and some of the most definitive climate change experiments continue to be conducted there. The paleoecological work underlying today’s Hadly Lab provides an unparalleled context for grappling with what is happening to our Earth and how we might best survive it. Mary Ellen is also a creator and the writer of Nature in the City, a map of San Francisco that enables residents to see the ways our lives are connected with the natural world, even in a city. She is the recipient of the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Science and Society Award and Stanford University’s Knight-Risser Prize for Western Environmental Journalism and regularly writes for many publications, including The New York Times, Science, Nautilus, and Bay Nature.
