Welaka National Fish HatcheryMerritt Island Wildlife Association Members’ Private TourSaturday, Sept 14, 2024, from 10am to 2:30pmRegistration Fee: $10 Join us for a special behind the scenes tour of the US Fish and Wildlife Service operated Welaka National Fish Hatchery. Our group will explore areas of the hatchery not open for public access to learn about their contributions to species conservation management. We will travel by personal vehicles around the hatchery property to visit the aquarium, ponds, springs, aviary, and tanks.  In addition to managing National Wildlife Refuges, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (US FWS) also operates National Fish Hatcheries. Since 1871, National Fish Hatcheries have been applying science-based approaches to conservation challenges. The hatcheries collaborate with partners and engage the public to conserve, restore, and enhance fish and other aquatic resources for the continuing benefit of the American people. Welaka National Fish Hatchery is charged with producing Atlantic Striped Bass for the St. Johns River to maintain the population for ecological, historical, and economic purposes. The hatchery has also begun work with two federally listed species, the federally threatened Eastern Indigo Snake and the federally endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrow.  This is an exclusive tour for Merritt Island Wildlife Association members and their guests. Registration is limited to 20 participants. To provide an opportunity for more members to be involved, registration will initially be limited to 2 tickets per membership.
