The Amish Heritage Foundation (AHF) is co-hosting Ordnung, An Amish Ballet Project with Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Student Co-op and the Mahoning Valley Ballet. The event will feature select scenes from the original ballet Ordnung, An Amish Ballet, created and choreographed by Professor Joan Van Dyke. This will be preceded by an expert panel titled "The Right to an Education," featuring Professor Van Dyke, Torah Bontrager (AHF's Founder & Executive Director), Dr. Christian Vaccaro (Sociology), Dr. Lingyan Yang (Women's Studies), Israel Akande (grad research student), and more. Yoder, which limits Amish children’s and adults’ right to attend school past the 8th grade. The multidisciplinary panel discussion will explore how art forms can help the public understand complex legal and social issues, such as those raised by Wisconsin v. Yoder. It has now been 50+ years since the Yoder decision. In that time, we have seen many changes in both Amish and non-Amish communities. Global economics, environmental changes, and human disruption of habitats have impacted the traditional Amish lifestyle. Many Amish are now compelled to join the mainstream American workforce without the education and training needed to be competitive. The results of the Yoder law have negatively affected multiple generations raised in strict Anabaptist communities over the past 5 decades. Our ballet project seeks to increase awareness and facilitate better access to education and career opportunities for Anabaptists, and many other groups also affected by Yoder. By humanizing complex topics through compelling narrative and visuals, the arts enable broader engagement in debate, advocacy, and policy changes related to education rights.
