Please join us for a special Widen the Circle gathering on Martha’s Vineyard. While stories of bigotry and hate tend to get the headlines, many people are quietly working to create respect and understanding in their own communities. Widen the Circle works with people in Germany and the United States who are uncovering local history—history related to trauma and injustice--like German Jewish history and the Holocaust or the history of racism in the U.S. They are using that history to combat antisemitism, racism, and xenophobia, and to create a more just world today. Our special guest will be Kristi Williams, a participant in Widen the Circle’s 2024 fellowship program. The fellowship program builds bridges by bringing American remembrance activists to Germany for a weeklong immersive learning experience with their German counterparts. The progam continues for a full year and fosters deep, lasting ties among participants.. Kristi is a descendant of a survivor of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and a Creek Freedman descendant. She founded Black History Saturdays, a pioneering institution in North Tulsa that teaches African American history to community members, ages 5 to 85. This curriculum is not allowed to be taught in Oklahoma schools. She has also created a library of banned books. We’ll be talking about Kristi’s inspiring story, and the impact her experience in Germany and the connections she’s made in the fellowship have had on her work. Widen the Circle founder Joel Obermayer will discuss how a project founded by his father 25 years ago as the Obermayer Awards has grown in influence and impact through the creation of Widen the Circle. He will also outline how important work being done in Germany is creating understanding and reconciliation where none seemed possible, and why this type of community-based effort is so effective and holds so much hope for the future.
