Tour of Montgomery County Recycling Center

The NBV Green Group is sponsoring a guided tour of our local Montgomery County Recycling Center on Friday, October 11 from 2 to 3 pm to view the recycling process at work and to obtain answers to related recycling questions. The 57,000-square-foot Recycling Center is adjacent to the County's Solid Waste Transfer Station and sits on about nine acres of land off Rockville Pike just south of Shady Grove Road.  The Center is an important cog in the County's recycling system and makes recycling easier for County residents by sorting the different kinds of recycling material (e.g., glass, cans, plastic bottles), baling it and trucking it to mills and plants where acceptable material can be made into something new.  In addition, the Center collects yard waste and composts it at the County's Compost Facility.  The facility tour will follow the collected material through the multiple hands-on as well as mechanical interventions that are needed to winnow out unacceptable trash/nonrecyclable material while preparing acceptable material for further processing elsewhere.  The process includes an extensive system of conveyers, air blowers and other mechanical sorters as well as human hands. Tour members should arrive by 1:45 pm at the facility's front entrance.  Up to 18 can be included in the tour.  Parking is in front of the facility, but is limited, so please be aware of this limitation and arrive early enough to find alternate parking, if needed, outside of the facility on public streets.
