Watching a busy backyard feeder from your living room window is fun and exciting, but there’s a wider world of birds waiting to be explored! The May spring migration in Ohio is the perfect time to admire both the far-flung fliers and the wildflowers with friends at Stratford. For some, knowing where and how to start birdwatching outside the backyard may seem overwhelming, but at Stratford, all curious minds are welcome, and we never stop learning. Admire the wildflowers and listen to the morning bird concert while walking the trails in small groups led by experienced birders and Ohio's Young Birders group. After exploring and engaging all your senses on your morning bird walk, blow open the doors to inquiry and learning further by participating in our breakout birding experiences. Enjoy coffee and morning fuel before or after your walk. Open to all experience levels and ages; recommended for ages 6+  Breakout Birding Experience: Build a Bluebird Nest Box – As cavity nesters, Bluebirds seek out nesting sites like tree hollows and stumps to build their nests. As humans actively remove these natural nesting sites, naturalists have encouraged people throughout the country to erect bluebird boxes which will help maintain and grow populations of bluebirds for generations to come. Take home your box or donate it to Stratford for ongoing monitoring. Breakout Birding Experience: Monitoring our Changing World –Explore how and why scientists monitor birds. Learn how to set up your new Bluebird box, how to minatory the activity and how to deter certain species like the House Sparrow from taking it over. Join us is learning how to monitor a Purple Martin box, and most importantly, how you can become citizen-scientist with projects like eBird.

Below is everything you need to know: What to ExpectWe'll gather on the patio for coffee and donuts before heading out for an 80-90 minute morning walk, where you'll get to listen to the bird concert and admire the beautiful diversity of wildflowers in our forest. After the walk you can relax and enjoy more coffee and donuts or participate in one or all of the Breakout Birding Experiences. What to Wear / Bring<ul><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Dress for the weather. It's best to wear layers to be comfortable for all aspects of the event. </li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Wear waterproof boots that can get muddy.  We have some boots available for borrowing, but sizes are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.  </li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Binoculars if you have some</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">A camera to capture your experience - We love seeing your photos and videos.  If you'd like to share any with us after the event, please send them to share@stratfordecologicalcenter.org.</li></ul>WeatherThis is a rain or shine program.  Please dress for the weather.  In the event of extreme or unsafe weather we will cancel and/or reschedule if possible.  We will notify you of any cancellations.  Cancellation PolicyIf you need to cancel for any reason, you have a couple of options:1. Notify us at least two weeks in advance of your cancellation and donate your registration fee - we will send you a donation acknowledgement letter for tax purposes 2. Notify us at least 2 weeks in advance and request a refund. Refunds take 5-10 business days to process. Cancellations less than 2 weeks prior to the program are not eligible for a refund, but please let us know so we can plan accordingly.  Cancellation requests should be e-mailed to info@stratfordecologicalcenter.org.
