About the Workshop:This workshop is a hands-on approach designed to help music educators strengthen their understanding and instruction of foundational Afro-Puerto Rican bomba and plena styles. It highlights how to design culturally meaningful and engaging lessons through the Orff Approach, offering practical methods to incorporate these rhythms into inclusive music classrooms.About Rody:Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Rody J Huertas is an educator and professional trombonist with experience in jazz, classical, Latin American, and Puerto Rican folkloric music. With over 22 years of performance experience, he has performed internationally in countries including the United States, France, Spain, Egypt, Belgium, Turkey, Per&uacute;, and Puerto Rico.Rody holds a Master&rsquo;s Degree in Music Education from the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico, where his graduate research explored the connection between students&rsquo; body movement and rhythmic understanding through the &ldquo;Reto de la Bomba Afropuertorrique&ntilde;a.&rdquo; His passion for dancing and music education led him to complete Orff Schulwerk Certification through Level III in 2023, as well as World Music Drumming Level I training.Since 2019, he has served as a music teacher at Frank Porter Graham Bilingual School in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He is also an active workshop presenter, having led sessions in Puerto Rico, Mexico, New York, California, Louisiana, and at the AOSA National Conference.
