36x36” Tarpaper; w/ ceramic oxides, steel frame. Clay/Oxide Drawings on Tar-paper. These drawings are created through a process that I have been developing for about 18 years. Through the use of raw ceramic pigments and oxides as well as powdered and solid unfired clay chunks I layer the surface of the tar paper. These materials are alternately fired(heated with a plumbing torch) and wet to adhere them to the surface of the tar paper. The oxides and pigments are then brushed and drawn with the flame from the torch, to push and pull the colors about the surface of the drawing. I then sift powdered clays) into some of the wet areas and sand the pigment and the clays together with a wooden block. Using the torch between layers to dry things out and see the colors. I have had the privilege of working with Three Mountain Alliance up mauka in planting native species and learning about our ʻāina over the last 10 years. We spent a day dyeing cloth in a Māmaki bath from the leaves we gathered in the beautiful forest of Keauhou. That is my inspiration for this piece. I hand-printed Māmaki leaves from my garden on Māmaki -dyed silk, kapa and rice paper, then hand-stitched with gold thread and perle cotton, hand-embroidered and beaded with gold leaf accents.
