This old home is all that remains of a family ranch or farm in La Luz, New Mexico. It's now surrounded by mobil homes and sits on an old county road that leads to the dump. New Mexico seems full of such places. If only they could tell us their stories: Of families long gone, hopes and dreams melted away; Not even the children remain to tell us their tale.

Ambient wind - Celesté Mendez
$13,500

Starting bid

Acrylic on canvas - 48 in x 36 in

This piece showcases a landscape with white sand dunes and an indigenous woman with her horse.

I am a 17 year old artist that has been painting for 6 years. This is my second painting I have done of the sand dunes here in New Mexico. This piece took me 10 days and is one of the largest I have ever done. I intended to have this painting give off the same quietness and tranquility that the dunes give in person. The woman and her horse are simply just existing in the peaceful and changing space, watching the storm from ahead approach. The swirls in the designs on the side represent the circle of life and I included the Zia symbol and kokopelli because they are symbols Ithat are recognizable and special to this land.

My inspiration comes from the people and places I have known. As a lifelong native of New Mexico, I love the beautiful landscapes and do my best capturing it.

I try to pass on the peaceful aspect of the Western way of life.
