Thirty years of research and discovery is finally told in Ranger Doug’s recent book “Ranger of the Lost Art—Rediscovering the WPA Poster Art of our National Parks.”  Only 28 copies have been fully signed by Doug Leen, author; co-artist Brian Maebius; historian Douglas Brinkley (Foreword), former Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell; former NPS Director Jon Jarvis; Documentarians Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan and NPS historian and author/historian Alfred Runte.  The book has over 400 illustrations in 224 pages and comes with a miniature silk-screened print of Grand Teton (the first NPS poster in this series-1938).  Hand bound and printed in the USA.

First Edition, signed by the author.

Published in 1963 by Interior Secretary Stewart Udall, "The Quiet Crisis" traces America's conservation history through figures like Jefferson, Thoreau, and Muir, warning that postwar prosperity masked vanishing wilderness, pollution, and urban sprawl. Udall calls for a new land ethic and stewardship, helping ignite the 1960s environmental movement alongside Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring"

  • Rob Arnberger started carving in 1977 when he served a tour of duty in the Ozark Country of Northern Arkansas as a National Park Ranger. “I fell in love with caricature carving, trying to capture a story in a wood figure, using only knives and gauges to free a humorous face and figure out of a block of wood. “Growing up in the southwest and working as a park ranger in many parks across the U.S. gave Arnberger a particular perspective on caricature carving. “I began to carve what I knew best—working cowboys, hill folk, and working park rangers.”
  • This Northern Pygmy Owl was carved in the “smoothie style,” much as decoy carvers do their art, focusing on “painting for realism.” Found throughout the West, it sometimes hunts during the day, sometimes attacking birds larger than itself. To me, all owls have an “attitude,” and I hope I captured a little bit of this guy’s viewpoint! And, as we all know, all owls possess a “Wisdom” not evident in our government today, especially when it comes to appreciating and managing our National Park System!

18' tipi, right on Yellowstone River, 20 miles north of Gardiner and park boundary.  Pets welcome.  12 miles from Chico Hot Springs resort.  Excellent fishing, birdwatching.  Primitive accommodations with no modern conveniences.  This is NOT $500/night Glamping!  Prepare to be "unplugged"!

Restaurants, gas, and basics available in Emigrant, 10 miles.  More in Gardiner, and all necessities are in Livingston, 30 miles north.

These pics show the setting, primarily.  We have not used the tipi yet, so inside is bare.  I plan to put in a futon or let people sleep on the ground on genuine buffalo hide - their choice.  Plus a small table with wash basin and kerosene lamp, a couple Adirondack chairs, and a portapottie esthetically situated. As I said, primitive.  If you think it needs more than that we can see what's possible.  No wifi.  No electricity.   Bathing in river.  😉  This is NOT $500/night glamping.
