The SU PTO has commissioned two wonderful authors to join us at Swallow Union Elementary! It really helps engage the students when they have familiarity with the author and their subject matter, so please consider buying a book in advance. There will not be copies available on Author Day. Note each author is tailored to specific grades, so make sure you select the correct author/book when purchasing. The authors will also sign each book brought in that day.  Grades 2 through 4 - Friday, March 28th, 2025Vivian Kirkfield is the author of two autobiography picture books, both of which feature Massachusetts women in history. She will be doing a presentation on one of these books, called One Girl's Voice: How Lucy Stone Helped Change the Law of the Land. The Make Your Voice Heard presentation includes a PowerPoint that focuses on finding your voice, whether with your art, writing, music, sports, or wherever your passion lies and/or whenever you see something that needs to be addressed. Like Lucy Stone who spoke out for women's rights and equality for all, each of us can make a difference with our voice. And characters in nonfiction pb bios can be excellent role models and mentors for our students. The presentation also outlines the 5Ps...five 'ingredients that are essential for success in reaching ANY goal. She'll read ONE GIRL'S VOICE: How Lucy Stone Helped Change the Law of the Land as part of the presentation. Lucy was the FIRST woman in Massachusetts to get a 4-year university degree (in 1847 at the ONLY school in the country at that time that allowed men and women to study together) and her life-long battle for equal rights (and the right to vote for women) resulted in many changes in her lifetime. Students will be prompted to think about what changes they would like to see in their classroom, community, and country, and how they might advocate for those changes There will also be a 15 minute Q&A so the students can make their voices heard.  (Ms. Kirkfield's second book is titled Pedal, Balance, Steer: Annie Londonderry, the First Woman to Cycle Around the World which can be purchased on Amazon if you're interested!) Grades K through 1 - Thursday, April 17, 2025Lori Sullivan - Murray's First Plane Ride Ms. Sullivan's new children's book is a tale to help young children with flight anxiety and children with special needs feel more comfortable and familiar with the flying process. In 2024, she earned a Reader's Choice Book Awards Four Star Rating for this story. Per the review, "Murray's First Plane Ride is a sweet, illustrated picture book for young children about a little boy embarking on his first trip on an airplane. The book provides a great introduction to air travel for younger-aged readers. Some youngsters are nervous about flying and the book will help parents and carers prepare a child for a first flight." Ms. Sullivan is a published children's author, former children's educator, and professional photographer. She lives in Groton with her husband and their two cats, and has two grown children.  You can make a book purchase through the PTO here and the books will be delivered to school.
