He is a founding member of the Los Angeles-area bands Saccharine Trust, Universal Congress Of and the Mecolodiacs. He also performed guest guitar spots on several Minutemen tracks and played alongside Black Flag's Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski. Baiza substituted for Nels Cline during Mike Watt’s European and American tours behind his second solo album, Contemplating the Engine Room, in 1997 and 1998. Currently, Baiza plays with Saccharine Trust as well as the improvisational unit Unknown Instructors with former Minutemen Mike Watt and George Hurley. Also an accomplished visual artist, Baiza’s work has been exhibited at galleries such as Cornelius Projects in San Pedro, and has graced album covers for the Minutemen and others.<p A parallel interest in free improvisation has led to an involvement with Julius Hemphill, Nels Cline, Wayne Peet, Vinny Golia, G.E. Stinson, Jeff Gauthier, Gregg Bendian and many more. From playing in a fourth grade band on a drum set fabricated out of ice cream bins, to playing punk rock in the early eighties, to discovering jazz and playing along with Ornette Coleman, to performing and attending a voodoo ceremony in Haiti, his musical development has been continual and exponential. Focusing on pure improvisation since the early nineties, he currently continues to collaborate, perform, and record widely with many of the world’s greatest musicians.
