Calling all nature geeks! Join us for a weekend BioBlitz to help spot, identify, and celebrate the unique plants, animals, and insects of the border region of Big Bend National Park! Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned expert, we need your help! We'll get you set up and oriented, and we'll work in groups to document high priority areas of the border region in the park. We have reserved several group campsites in the Chisos Basin for Friday and Saturday night. You are welcome to join for a few hours, or a few days - whatever your schedule allows. We have group events planned for July 3-5, July 17-19 and Sept 18-20. You can also participate on your own or with a group of friends any other time between now and the end of Sept. Sign up here so we have a head-count, and we'll send you more info via email about what to bring, where to meet, and what to expect! *** Frequently Asked Questions *** Is there a cost to this event? You will need to pay an entrance fee for the park. Additionally, if you plan to camp with us at the Chisos Basin site, we will ask for a small donation to help cover the costs (suggested $5 per person per night) but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Will there be food and drinks provided? There will be water at the campground and may be some snacks for the group, but you should be prepared to cook your own meals. Expect a festive environment around the campsite in the evenings sharing stories and photos and food (potluck style) with the rest of the volunteers! Who is organizing this event? This is part of a broader effort organized annually in April-May by the N-Gen Sonoran Desert Researchers’ Border BioBlitz project. The TX chapter of Society for Ecological Restoration worked with N-Gen to extend the dates this year so we can fill gaps in our knowledge of biodiversity in the region. Is the National Park Service involved with this event? No, NPS staff are not involved. We did communicate with them to make sure we had all necessary permits. Do I have to join the iNaturalist group for my observations to count?Anyone who makes observations in the polygon of interest will automatically be added to the iNat project, but we encourage you to join the group to find out more about the project and keep the momentum up.
