Join Coldharbour Institute, Western Colorado University, and our partners for a two-day introduction to biochar, exploring the science, technology, and practical applications of this versatile material. Day one will bring together researchers, practitioners, and land managers to explore biochar principles, characteristics, production technologies, soil applications, and emerging projects. The day will combine classroom instruction with presentations and panel discussions highlighting how biochar is being used and developed across the region. Day two will move from theory to practice with a hands-on biochar production workshop at the Coldharbour Ranch. Participants will learn about biochar production through an applied burn day, including the use of kiln technology and considerations for producing and utilizing biochar from woody biomass. By &nbsp;the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: &nbsp;1. Understand what biochar is, why it serves as a key soil amendment, and how it can be used in environmental remediation contexts.&nbsp;2. Gain hands-on experience operating the Ring of Fire kiln&nbsp;3. Learn about harvesting biochar and preparing it for soil &nbsp;application.&nbsp; This workshop is designed for farmers and ranchers, land managers, waste management professionals, natural resource professionals, students, researchers, and anyone interested in understanding the potential of biochar to support healthy soils, productive working lands, and responsible biomass management.
