Books at the Institute presents an in-person presentation with Laura Spinney, best-selling science journalist, novelist, and non-fiction writer, as she discusses her new book Proto: How One Ancient Language Went Global in conversation with Maria Sonevytsky. Proto traces the fascinating story of Proto-Indo-European, the ancient ancestor of languages spoken by nearly half of humanity. It follows how this tongue, born in the steppe between Europe and Asia, spread through the migrations of peoples across continents. Drawing on linguistics, archaeology, and genetics, it reveals how this lost language shaped culture, literature, and human history. Book signing and reception with light refreshments to follow.
