This is 001. The first painting in Both Ends of the Brush, and it's Piper.

Piper's been waiting the longest out of any dog we have right now. She's already had one TPLO surgery, with a second one coming, and for the first two days afterward she couldn't stand at all — I had to carry her outside just for her to go potty. I painted this on the floor beside her during that stretch, because it was what I had left to give when I couldn't do anything else for the rescue.

This one comes framed and ready to hang, canvas texture under glass-free framing so the brushstrokes still show. It's the version that feels most like it belongs somewhere permanent.

I painted this while I was living in a recovery room with Kyra, 24/7, for four months. She'd just had a complete hip replacement. There was no "checking on her between things" — I was on that floor with her, every day, for four months straight.

That's her and me in the rain, under one umbrella, and I painted it that way because that's exactly what those four months felt like. Not a single bad night — a whole season of them. I couldn't fix her hip. I couldn't speed up healing that only time was going to do. All I could do was stay in the storm with her, for as long as it took.

This one isn't a commission or a nomination. It's what came out of me during one of the hardest stretches I've been through with a dog I love. Kyra's been on the other end of my leash for years — this is what that actually looks like when it gets hard, not the version people usually show.
