Student Registration

In this hands-on engineering course, middle school and high school students will explore the fundamental principles that make bridges strong, stable, and efficient. Through demonstrations, experiments, and hands-on construction, students will learn about tension, compression, bending, structural stability, load paths, trusses, and engineering design. The centerpiece of the course is a two-bridge design challenge. Students will first design and build their own balsa-wood bridge within a set of engineering constraints. They will then load their bridge to failure and conduct a detailed failure analysis to determine what happened, why it happened, and how the design could be improved. Students will then use what they learned from their first bridge to design and build a second, improved bridge. The two bridges will be tested and compared, allowing students to see firsthand how engineering decisions affect structural performance. This course will meet for 8 Sessions from September 22 - November 10 on Tuesdays from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. All materials are included in the registration fee.
