People will be difficult, things will go wrong, and our default response &mdash; aversion, resentment, wishing things were otherwise &mdash; means we suffer twice: once from the difficulty, and once from our relationship to it. The Tibetan tradition of lojong, or mind training, offers something more useful than either resignation or positive thinking. It is a set of methods for taking the very things that destabilize the mind and using them as the material of practice. The ego-grasping at the root of our reactivity cannot be seen clearly in comfortable conditions &mdash; it only shows itself under pressure. Which means that pressure, properly understood, is not the obstacle to practice. It is the practice. Over the weekend, we will examine the logic and methods of lojong: how to locate the actual source of disturbance in the mind rather than in circumstances, how to work with the mind training teachings as active tools, and how to bring this orientation into the high-friction conditions of ordinary life.
