Brisbane offers many opportunities for photographers to capture the rhythm of city landscapes. This image, inspired by the work of Richard Diebenkorn, shows, Alvarado, Santa Clara, and Tulare streets, with the lagoon substituting for a blue sky. Taken with a 200 mm lens, the view is compressed to emphasize the steep hillsides that give definition to our beautiful town. A luxurious pheasant plumage dominates the left half of the image. On the right, the interior of a wooden box, is occupied by a field microscope and its accessories, a violin back and sample leg for harpsichord stands. On the wall is pinned a 19th century photo; children of an immigrant family who once lived in Oakland CA. Rare books on musical instruments compositionally balance the scene. Two artists brushes articulate the center, a varnishing brush and a pounce brush used in executing Trompe L’oeil effects in harpsichord case painting.
