As the sun slips below the rooftops and Downtown Opelika begins to darken, a different side of the city comes to life. Join the Museum of East Alabama for Lantern Lore Tours, an atmospheric walking experience through historic Downtown Opelika. Guided by lantern light, guests will make their way through familiar streets while hearing stories of local history, enduring legends, mysterious encounters, and the people and places that have left their mark on the city. Each evening features two completely different tours. The 5:30 PM tour begins around sunset, offering a twilight walk as downtown transitions from day into night. The 8:00 PM tour takes place fully after dark, creating an entirely different atmosphere. Each tour follows its own route and features a different collection of stories, historic sites, and local lore—so guests can choose one experience or attend both for the full Lantern Lore experience. Along the way, you may hear tales connected to old hotels, railroad history, historic storefronts, churches, homes, and other landmarks that have witnessed generations of Opelika life. Some stories are rooted firmly in the historical record. Others have been passed down through local memory, folklore, and accounts that are a little harder to explain. Part history tour, part ghost walk, and part old-fashioned storytelling, Lantern Lore invites you to experience Downtown Opelika in a way you never have before.Whether you’re a longtime local, a history enthusiast, a lover of spooky stories, or simply looking for a memorable October evening, grab a ticket, follow the lanterns, and discover the stories waiting in the shadows. Tours are offered at 5:30 PM and 8:00 PM, with a different route and experience at each time. Space is limited, so advance tickets are encouraged.
