Deborah Manisto - As a child, I had a female black cat named Panther. She had a litter of kittens that I got to keep in my room, much to the dismay of my younger brother. I was able to keep one of the kittens, an orange one named Tiger. Not very original names, I know, but give me a break — I was only 10. As an adult, I had Emily, who was with us for less than a year. Then I got littermates Buster and Molly. They lived to be 16 and 18 years old, respectively, and provided hours of entertainment and companionship for our family. Chasing Butterflies, by Deborah Manisto. Original collage and watercolor. $80 ~ 50 percent of the proceeds for any purchased painting will be donated to Carlton County Animal Rescue and 50% to artist

Artist: Karen Savage Blue Watercolor 5"x7" Local artist and art teacher Karen Savage Blue donated these two bear watercolors. Known as a talented and very imaginative painter, Savage Blue was recently honored with the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council’s George Morrison Artist Award, which recognizes an individual artist whose body of work has made a significant contribution to the arts over an extended period of time. Of all the animals, Anishinaabeg favored makade-makwa, the black bear. They saw makade-makwa as a protector and healer of humankind. The bear is the one who can walk between the upper, middle and lower worlds. Bear is a friend and teacher, and also a guide to help people in their travels between the worlds. “The Ojibways have great respect for the Bear. According to their legends, in the distant past the Bear had a human form and was, in fact, an ancestor of the Ojibways. Therefore he understands the Indian language and will never attack or fight any Indian if he is addressed properly.” ~ Miskwaabik Animikii (Norval Morrisseau)
