Workshop: Introduction to Shibari Saturday, September 28th, 12pm - 6pm, with a break with nourishing refreshments from 2:30-3:30pm This unique introductory workshop will present Shibari - a Japanese erotic and artistic form of rope tying - in a warm, nourishing, and welcoming container. Shibari instructors Sydona & Anna will cover a brief history of Shibari, consent, safety, crafting a scene, and building intimacy through the medium of rope. We’ll demonstrate several basic ties and general rope handling, followed by ample time for play, practice, reflection, and facilitated conversation. Throughout the workshop, Shibari and WiseBodies instructors will be on-hand to answer questions. We will encourage each participant to take your time, to care deeply for yourself, and to make sure you have full-bodied "yes" for each and every step we take. This full-day workshop includes a morning session (12pm-2:30pm), a 1-hour break with nourishing snacks and beverages by Random Harvest, and an afternoon session (3:30-6pm). Light refreshments will also be offered throughout the day. What to bring: Plan to wear clothes you can freely move in. Feel free to bring your own rope, any sort of safety/comfort object, a notebook for taking notes, and water. Shibari hemp rope will be available for purchase during the workshop, or it can be pre-ordered when you register for the workshop. Having your rope to take home, and also to work with in the teaching sessions, can feel empowering. 2. Live Shibari Performance + Facilitated Discussion Saturday, September 28th from 7:30pm - 9pm Join us Saturday evening for a Shibari performance by Sydona & Anna (bios below), who have been tying and teaching together since 2021. Together they use this medium to challenge their minds and bodies through the combination of suffering and care, strength and softness. Along this shared journey with rope and kink, they have cultivated an intimate care and closeness for each other in and out of ropes. We will begin with a short discussion of what to expect during the performance, highlighting the safety measures and carefully negotiated consent taking place between the performers. Next, Sydona and Anna will perform, crafting a scene especially for us. Following the performance, we will have quiet time for reflection and for the performers to rest, before closing with a facilitated discussion. Since completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alvin Ailey/Fordham University in May of 2018, she has been performing in various nightlife around Brooklyn and New York City as a dancer, immersive performer, and rope artist. She uses her extensive training and performance experience in Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, and Jazz, as a foundation for her ventures into immersive theater and experimental performance art. In the past six years she has performed at events by House of Yes, House of X and House of Gemini and Scorpio, Seeking Haven, The Red Pavilion, The Box, and Hit Me Up. Anna Anna is a movement artist living in Brooklyn, NY (land originally inhabited by and stolen from the Munsee Lenape and Canarsie people). Driven by her cravings for community, connection, and spaces of shared learning / (un)learning, and with a desire to preserve her continual curiosities Anna found (and stuck with/got stuck to) dance and movement. Anna’s work (both in and out of the studio) explores: collective & individual realities, shared intimacy, idiosyncratic differences, physical manifestations of self & socially imposed labels, power of identity, emergence of community, and recycling of movements, dancers, ideas, waste. Anna is also a 200-hr Certified Yoga Teacher (Sondra Loring, Sadhana Yoga), dance teacher for kids ages 3-12, photography model, ceramicist, and kinkster. Event Offered by WiseBodies WiseBodies grew from the recognition that we all benefit from the opportunity to learn about human sexuality in an environment that is warm, intelligent, and safe, an environment in which all questions are welcome. At WiseBodies important learning takes place, community-building is supported, anxiety about sex education is reduced, and students and teachers have the chance to relax into learning about a subject so important to healthy, whole being. Private Shibari Sessions with Sydona Sunday, September 29th, 10am - 6pm, by appointment and with pre-approval only Private sessions are wonderful for anyone who would like to dive deep into learning rope bondage in an intimate, professional, and relaxed setting. All levels are welcome. A basic lesson includes a brief history of Shibari and rope bondage, safety, types of rope, and a variety of knots and frictions, with guidance toward how to put them to use to meet your intentions. For those with previous Shibari experience, we’ll start the lesson with a quick assessment of skills and begin at whatever level makes the most sense. Private sessions are available for individuals or pairs. Private sessions are 90 minutes long and cost $300. They include negotiation, tying, and aftercare. Sydona enjoys working with all bodies, abilities, ages, genders, and levels of experience.
