Legato for Literacy Benefit Concert featuring the Fisk Jubilee Singers

Event closed

The Need:

  • Reading scores from schools in 37208 under-perform MNPS averages.
  • According to Every Library Institute, adults with low literacy skills are far more likely to be under or unemployed and more likely to turn to criminal activities.
  • Previously supported by an MNPS contract, the funds for which are no longer available.

The Program:

  • A literacy and reading program started by Lee Chapel AME Church to serve the 37208 zip code.
  • 37 students from six schools tutored during the 2023-24 school year.
  • Students from Fisk University’s Scholars Program provide consistent and high-quality instruction.

The Results:

  • 9.5% overall gain in literacy and reading performance.
  • 5.3% more students are now performing “above proficiency.”
  • All grades showed gains in proficiency, word recognition, and high-frequency words.
  • The program’s mission is to remove barriers and enhance students' opportunities to read at grade level or above.

Raising Funds to Continue the Mission
