The Need:
- Reading scores from schools in 37208 under-perform MNPS averages.
- According to Every Library Institute, adults with low literacy skills are far more likely to be under or unemployed and more likely to turn to criminal activities.
- Previously supported by an MNPS contract, the funds for which are no longer available.
The Program:
- A literacy and reading program started by Lee Chapel AME Church to serve the 37208 zip code.
- 37 students from six schools tutored during the 2023-24 school year.
- Students from Fisk University’s Scholars Program provide consistent and high-quality instruction.
The Results:
- 9.5% overall gain in literacy and reading performance.
- 5.3% more students are now performing “above proficiency.”
- All grades showed gains in proficiency, word recognition, and high-frequency words.
- The program’s mission is to remove barriers and enhance students' opportunities to read at grade level or above.
Raising Funds to Continue the Mission
