About Trans USA
Trans USA National Pageantry is a registered 501c3 organization that strives to celebrate and promote the development of transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming leaders as visible advocates and role models, and all proceeds directly support the community projects and advocacy efforts of our representatives.
About our Theme
The first group in the United States to organize explicitly around trans rights and self-determination, S.T.A.R. (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) emerged following the Stonewall riots, founded by Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson. Protesting discrimination and systemic violence against their bodies, clothing, choice of sexual partners, and other markers of identity and expression, trans activists in S.T.A.R., the Queens Liberation Front, and other pioneering New York groups won their first victories in the form of state protections in the early 1970s. They also pushed for inclusion in the gay and women’s liberation movements and established the first shelter of its kind in the nation (S.T.A.R. House on East 2nd Street). While the original S.T.A.R. organization folded in 1973, their pioneering work has inspired generations of activists and trans trailblazers and remains highly relevant in the modern fight for social acceptance, legal protections, and basic human rights.
Our theme for Trans USA 2024, "S.T.A.R. Power", serves not only as an homage to those who have laid the foundation for our own advocacy work but as a reminder that our collective fight is not over until all of us are free to reach for own our place among the stars.
