Please join Bridge to Justice, The Colorado Attorney General's Office, and Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence ("SPAN") for a panel discussion on domestic violence fatalities in Colorado family law cases. This event is accredited for two (2) CLE ethics credits. We believe this training also meets the requirements for CFI and PRE domestic violence training pursuant to C.R.S. §14-10-127.5.  This training will be held in the Jury Assembly Room of the Boulder County Justice Center on December 3, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. There will also be a virtual option (Zoom). The registration fee is $40 per person. The proceeds from this event will support Bridge to Justice, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit law firm based in Boulder. The mission of Bridge to Justice is to bridge the gap between legal needs and legal access with affordable, high quality legal services.  The Colorado Attorney General reports that at least 56 individuals lost their lives in connection to domestic violence in 2023. Some of those homicides correlated with significant events in the perpetrators’ family law cases.  Bridge to Justice investigated the intersection between domestic violence fatalities in Colorado and civil (family law and protection order) litigation. Based on publicly available data in those cases, we assessed correlated trends between case events and lethality. In many of the cases, there are no apparent simple interventions that could have prevented the homicide. However, each tragic case provides us, as professionals, an opportunity to delve more deeply into innovative and effective ways we can interrupt the prevalence of lethal domestic violence. The purpose of this CLE is not to cast aspersions on anyone involved in these tragic cases, but to encourage those of us working with survivors to continue to think critically about the safety of our clients and their children. This CLE will present several concrete suggestions on how to do just that. Out of respect for the families and their loved ones involved in these cases, explicitly identifying information will not be discussed at this CLE.  Rachel Dane will moderate and serve as the lead presenter for this CLE. Ms. Dane has worked almost exclusively with survivors of domestic violence in the family law court system since 2014. Ms. Dane is a Staff Attorney at Bridge to Justice. In this role, Ms. Dane oversees the agency’s Justice for Survivors of Domestic Violence Program, which provides grant-funded representation to survivors in complex family law litigation and serves as a training program for two Legal Fellows. Additionally, Ms. Dane serves as the Managing Attorney for the Lawyers for Victims Program for Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (“SPAN”). This program provides representation to approximately 60 survivors of domestic violence per year in protection order cases and some emergency custody hearings. Through her experience and collaboration with different agencies, Ms. Dane has developed several best practices for addressing client safety, which she will discuss.  Agenda:<ol><ol><li>Introductions.</li><li>Overview of Colorado Rule of Professional Conduct 2.1 and how it relates to representing survivors of violence. </li><li>Defining domestic violence.</li><li>Shalyn Kettering of the Colorado Attorney General's Office will present on the work of the Colorado Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee and their 2023 findings. </li><li>Rachel Dane will present data from the Bridge to Justice study on protection order and family law case histories in connection with domestic violence fatalities in Colorado including the prevalence of protection orders and family law case events at or near the time of the fatality. </li><li>The presenters will then discuss Lethality Assessment Tools and how to use them. </li><li>The presenters will discuss client consultation considerations regarding lethality. </li><li>We will then discuss ways that family law professionals can coordinate with local domestic violence organizations. </li><li>Mallory Woodman the Director of Legal Advocacy at SPAN will explain their program and how SPAN's work can supplement the work done by family law professionals. </li><li>Questions and comments.
