Thank you for supporting this mission. #CarsonStrong Carson&rsquo;s Journey: A Story of Strength and SurvivalOn the morning of September 25, 2024, Carson&rsquo;s life changed forever. While on his way to work, he was involved in a horrific car accident during foggy, rainy weather. His vehicle veered off the road, plunged into a ditch, and flipped end over end three times before landing on its roof. Due to the severe weather, the Nightingale air ambulance was unable to respond. Carson was rushed by ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was admitted as an Alpha Trauma patient. Upon arrival, his parents were told the unthinkable: Carson had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and was placed on life support. The coming days would be critical. He had sustained three skull fractures on the right side of his head, a deep laceration, brain bleeding and swelling, a displaced collarbone, a torn neck ligament, a compression fracture in his T5 vertebra, and numerous abrasions and bruises. Carson was closely monitored in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit (NICU).On October 1, Carson&rsquo;s condition took a sudden turn. He underwent an emergency left decompressive hemicraniectomy to relieve pressure on his brain. During the procedure, he experienced hemorrhaging and required a partial temporal lobectomy. The next day, he underwent two additional surgeries to place a tracheotomy and a PEG tube. Despite the odds, Carson slowly began to stabilize. On October 9, he was moved to the ICU Step Down Unit, where he celebrated his 20th birthday. A week later, on October 17, his trach was removed&mdash;an important step in his recovery. The trauma team cleared him for discharge to a rehabilitation center. A bed opened up at The Shepherd Center Rehabilitation Facility in Atlanta, GA, and on October 23, Carson was transferred after spending 29 days in the hospital. For the next 7&frac12; weeks, he received intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy six days a week. On November 22, surgeons replaced the portion of his skull that had been removed during his emergency brain surgery. Carson made remarkable physical progress during his time in Atlanta, but he was still not speaking or eating on his own. On December 13, he returned home to continue outpatient rehabilitation. Just one week later, on December 20, he began outpatient therapy in Richmond. Since then, Carson has continued speech and occupational therapy twice a week. He has started talking, and his cognitive abilities are improving every day. After four long months, his PEG tube was removed, and he is now eating and taking all medications by mouth. In addition to therapy in Richmond, he travels to Norfolk three days a week for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Red Light Therapy. Carson&rsquo;s journey is far from over&mdash;but his determination is unwavering. He continues to fight every day with courage, strength, and a spirit that inspires everyone around him.
