Students will work together to create a giant class piñata to crack open on the final day while also designing their own take-home piñata to finish and celebrate with family and friends. Along the way, we'll explore the history of piñatas, learn construction and decorating techniques, enjoy a few extra gooey art projects, and spend time outdoors when possible. Weather permitting, we'll visit nearby natural spaces like Lester River Park and Brighton Beach to spark creativity and inspire original stories. Students will build skills in character creation, communication, collaboration, and creative expression while exploring oral storytelling, writing and illustration, or interactive story and game design. Tuesday &amp; Thursday9:00–11:30 AM Batik for Kids: Wearable Art Why do a panting for the wall when you can wear it instead? Batik is beautiful, but also tricky. We'll take a shortcut and do a simpler version of this fun resist art. Bring in any 100% cotton material - a bag, a tee, anything with an open unprinted area to experiment on, you can even bring more than one. We will do all that we can and play along the way with color and design. We will play a fun kids' herbalism game to start recognizing herbal helpers and what problems they can work on. We can go on nature walks to see if we can spot healing plants hiding in plain sight. We will learn some drawing techniques to draw the plants and help each other notice ways to recognize the right plants, how to harvest respectfully and how to use their medicine.  Plenty of time outdoors, weather permitting. Lara has a Master of Art Education and a BS in Elementary Education with specialties in Art and Early Childhood. She has earned her living as an art teacher, muralist and herbalist and is newly getting back into floor loom weaving. She has taught for the Duluth Art Institute, Fairbanks Folk School, Donkey Mill Art Center Hawaii as well as in Latvia, New Zealand, Alaska, New Mexico, Montana and Hawaii. She has painted murals in AK, CA, HI, KS &amp; MN. Her favorites are painting for children's spaces on themes around animals, plants and nature.
