Malian musician Yacouba Sissoko is one of a long ancestral line of djelys [DJEE-lee] —musicians who preserve the history and fables of past rulers, nobles, social groups, and families. As a master of the kora – the long-necked West African lute that is the djely’s principal instrument – Yacouba devotes his musical gift to expanding the awareness of West African history and culture, spreading the word of peace, and empowering his listeners to take charge and realize their imagined futures. His performances have a magical effect on audiences as he skillfully transforms traditional songs and stories that he learned from his forefathers into modern day messages of peace, love, and harmony. Yacouba will be backed by his quartet SIYA. Cultures of Ceremony is series of monthly concerts, recorded live, produced by the Temenos Center for the Arts, at the historic Dreamland Recording Studios, in Woodstock, NY. Presenting artists whose aesthetics and lineages are rooted in ceremony music, the series aims to restore and enliven cultures of generosity, nourishment, community, and spirituality, by creating the opportune conditions for artists to make music, to document their gifts, and to share in the vibrancy and goodness that comes from bringing people together in ways that bestow honor to each of us. Artists are invited for a short residency at Dreamland, culminating in a live recording that is returned to the artists as a gift. Community members are invited to cook and bake for the artists, so that they can be nourished by healthy foods and home hospitality – rare phenomena in the business of music. The recording is for the artists to do with as they wish, and concert attendees are gifted a single track recording of the concert they attended. The documentation of the ceremony becomes a future ceremony that anyone can return to, with the intention that it be consumed differently than the ordinary ways in which we consume music – not so much songs to listen to, a place to return to. The series asks musicians to consider the ways in which they shape their art according to the dictates of showbusiness, and in this alternate space, to explore the freedoms in returning to the aesthetics of ceremony.
